This list is a bit dated but gives you a good idea of the job descriptions and tasks different positions might have. Most of these job descriptions fit the computer networking technologies degrees. Computer Operator I (IT -- All) Operates and monitors computer equipment. Performs routine tasks to maintain computer equipment and their peripherals. Loads peripheral equipment such as tapes and printer paper for operating runs. Observes peripheral equipment and error messages displayed on monitor of terminal to detect faulty output or machine stoppage. May require an associate's degree or its equivalent and 0-3 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Engineer IV (IT -- All) Provides expert judgment and analysis for the design, development and implementation of technical products and systems. Resolves highly complex technical issues and conducts advanced research. Recommends alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures. Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering and may be expected to have an advanced degree in a related area with 7-10 years of technical experience. License and certification may be required. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Engineer V (IT -- All) Provides expert consultation in one or more areas for the design, development and implementation of technical products and systems. Recognized as technical leader and resource. Recommends alterations and enhancements to improve quality of products and/or procedures. Responsible for all internal activities and product development. Requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering and may be expected to have a related master's degree with at least 10 years of related experience. License and certification may be required. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Information Technology Manager (IT -- All) Manages the information technology department in accordance with organizational policies and goals. Ensures proper functioning of company's information processing system and makes upgrades as necessary. Helps business operations utilize information systems to improve efficiency. Keeps computer equipment, hardware, and software updated to meet organizational needs. Follows appropriate programming procedures.
